Ball and Burlap Live Oak Planting Instructions

Hello Houston

The following is a pretty detailed list of instructions for planting a Live Oak Tree and How to Care and Water it too

Planting Directions

> Dig a hole twice as wide and about the same depth as the root ball. If you have heavy clay soil like most of Houston TX, mix your dirt with lighter top soil [sandy loam] in equal portions

> Leave the Burlap on the tree is its B+B - [optional] smaller baskets with firm root balls can be removed
larger baskets can be left on the root ball with no damage to the tree. [optional] the top of the burlap can be removed - we do not recommend this

> Plant the tree so that the root ball is slightly superior to the existing soil - we like about 2 - 4 inches on larger trees. Never plant low. Do not cover the crown of your trees trunk with dirt

> Water and tamp the soil alternatively. Firm . mix around the root ball, eliminating all air pockets

> Make a deep basin of soil to retain water

> Water slowly: deeply and thoroughly. We like using soaker hoses or  tree - gater bags. Otherwise use a hose at a slow trickle - about a pencils with. The force of the water should not disturb the soil. Saturation occurs when the soil will no longer accept water, it will just pool and run on the surface

> MULCH - we suggest a good composted mulch We do not normally suggest rock or plastic style mulch's

> DO NOT FERTILIZE your newly planted tree for at least one year [some exceptions]
